Roadworthy Certificate

When you need to re-register your vehicle or sell it or otherwise transfer ownership of a vehicle, you are legally required to first obtain a roadworthy certificate after a thorough roadworthy inspection. This roadworthy inspection ensures that your vehicle meets the minimum safety standards to be driven legally on Victorian roads. This helps reduce the number of poor condition vehicles on the road, while ensuring people’s and your safety.

A Roadworthy Certificate remains valid for 30 days after the date of issue. If any item fails to meet the standard, it must be repaired within 7 days or a complete inspection must again be carried out on the vehicle.

A roadworthy inspection covers the major safety related items, including:

  • Tyres and wheels
  • Suspension, steering and braking systems
  • All seat and seat belts
  • Reflectors, light and lamp
  • Windscreen and its wipers and washers
  • All glass and windows in the vehicle
  • The structure and integration of the vehicle itself
  • Engine, chassis, body and other safety related items
